UN calls for release of protesters in Hong Kong, highlighting human rights issues

Notícias Portugal13 September 2026 at 11:06

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights called for the overturning of sentences of up to seven years in prison imposed on three protesters in Hong Kong. Volker Turk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, classified the penalties as excessive, both for the activists and for the civil society organization to which they are linked.

The convicted Chow Hang-Tung, Lee Cheuk-yan, and Albert Ho were detained for organizing peaceful vigils in memory of the victims of the 1989 repression at Tiananmen Square in Beijing. The three were members of the Hong Kong Alliance, a former group supporting the students who participated in the 1989 pro-democracy protests, which was dissolved in recent years due to government pressure.

Turk emphasized that the sentence reflects a "flawed National Security Law," which has been increasingly restricting civic space in Hong Kong since its passage in 2020. The high commissioner called for the sentences to be reconsidered and for the legislation to be revised to be in compliance with the international human rights obligations that China has committed to respect.

The UN statements reflect growing international concern about the human rights situation in Hong Kong and the state of freedom of expression in the region.

Why this matters

The UN appeal highlights the growing tension between Chinese authorities and the international community regarding the state of human rights in Hong Kong. Readers in regions with connections to Chinese or Hong Kong communities may be directly affected by these issues of freedom of expression and civil organization. The case also follows the dissolution of the Hong Kong Alliance, a former group supporting the 1989 students, reflecting a pattern of increasing repression in the region.

The night when Castelo Branco entered the history of Portugal's wonders

The Garden of the Episcopal Palace of Castelo Branco was distinguished as one of the New 7 Wonders of Portugal in the Tourism category, in an announcement made on September 13, 2026 in Sintra. The garden, a National Monument and a singular example of Portuguese baroque, was commissioned by Bishop D. João de Mendonça around 1720 and became public in 1919. The space is divided into four terraces with sculptures of the zodiac signs, the seasons, the continents, and a staircase of kings where the monarchs of the Filipino period appear in reduced dimensions. The victory represents a moment of heritage and tourism affirmation for Castelo Branco and the region, projecting a space that had existed for centuries beyond local borders.
