The Tiago Cabaço Winery, located in Estremoz, was elected one of the New 7 Wonders of Portugal by winning the national vote in the 21st Century category. The result was announced on Saturday night, September 12, during the National Grand Final held in Sintra and broadcast by TVI. In the decisive phase, the Alentejo candidate competed with the Capelinhos Volcano Interpretation Centre, in the Azores, and with the Olive Oil Museum of Bobadela, in Oliveira do Hospital.
The distinction recognizes the building and its architectural value, highlighting a contemporary construction associated with wine production and the viticultural landscape of Estremoz. The winery is partially buried and features a half-moon configuration, designed to ensure the cool conditions necessary for wine production and reduce visual impact on the surrounding landscape. The building's design follows the vineyard lines, seeking to establish a relationship between architecture, productive activity, and the territory.
The tasting room features a large glazed surface with views of the vineyard, Estremoz Castle, Serra d'Ossa, and Evoramonte Castle. The interior route allows visitors to follow different stages of wine production, linking technical areas with the visitor experience. The candidacy was part of the 21st Century category, reserved for contemporary constructions built since 1985, with criteria such as technical innovation, sustainability, and architectural quality being evaluated.
The election was decided by the public through telephone calls and the TVI Pass application, with PwC as the auditor of the process. The 2026 edition featured 147 initial heritage sites from all regions of the country, distributed across seven categories. The Tiago Cabaço Winery reached the grand final after securing one of three available places in the national semi-final on September 5. With this election, Estremoz joins the map of the New 7 Wonders of Portugal through a construction linked to wine and the landscape of the Alentejo.
