The heat is expected to continue into the beginning of next week in Portugal, but a significant drop in temperatures is forecast starting Tuesday, September 15. According to Meteored, the change will be gradual and won't reach the entire territory at the same time, with the first signs being felt mainly on the North and Central coast.
Coimbra is one of the most expressive examples of this change, with the forecast maximum of 36°C on Sunday potentially giving way to 26°C on Tuesday, a drop of 10°C. In Leiria, projections point to a shift from 34°C to 24°C, and in Porto the maximum temperature could drop from 31°C to 22°C in the same interval. These drops over two days should make afternoons less hot in these cities.
The decrease in temperatures will not be simultaneous across all regions. On Tuesday, while the North and Central coast should register more evident relief, the interior will continue under the influence of heat. On Monday, Santarém could reach 37°C, Beja 36°C and Castelo Branco and Portalegre around 35°C. Starting Wednesday, the 16th, the repositioning of the Azores High should favor circulation from the north or northwest, allowing the arrival of a less hot air mass.
The Azores High, when extending its influence to the Iberian Peninsula, generally favors stable and dry weather, but its position conditions the origin of air masses. In this case, the initial reinforcement favors warming, but the repositioning mid-week will allow for a less hot circulation. Meteored's forecast associates the temperature drop with this change in airflow, maintaining the anticyclonic influence over the weather conditions.
