Does the increase in derivatives abroad indicate the Brazilian stock market will rise?

cbn11 September 2026 at 22:39

In the CBN Dinheiro program this Friday (11), expert Marcelo d'Agosto answered a question from listener Gabriel about the financial market. Gabriel asked why an increase in the number of open derivative contracts involving Brazilian assets abroad would indicate an appreciation of the Brazilian stock market.

Derivative contracts are financial instruments whose value is linked to the performance of a specific underlying asset. The expert explained that a typical example is the call option, which gives the buyer the right to purchase an asset at a predetermined price, with payment due in the future.

According to Marcelo d'Agosto, the seller of the call option receives a premium upfront in exchange for committing to sell the asset at the fixed price on the specified date. If the asset appreciates in the future, the buyer exercises their right to purchase. If the asset depreciates, the buyer loses only the value of the premium they paid to secure that option.

Sines received 95% of gas imported by Portugal in 2025

About 95% of natural gas imported by Portugal in 2025 arrived through the Sines terminal, with Nigeria (50%), the United States (43%) and Russia (7%) as the main countries of origin, according to a report by ERSE. Forty-six LNG carrier unloadings were carried out at the terminal, seven fewer than in 2024, and 7,546 tankers were supplied. Portugal intends to end Russian LNG imports by early 2027, under European rules, with only one long-term contract with the Spanish company Naturgy. The remaining 5% of gas entered via pipeline through the connections with the Spanish network. The ERSE report also concludes that there was an overall improvement in the performance of gas networks in 2025, with a reduction in the number and duration of supply interruptions.
