Sines received 95% of the gas that entered Portugal and three Russian ships in 2025

dnoticias.pt11 September 2026 at 23:02

About 95% of the gas that entered Portugal in 2025 arrived through the Sines terminal, according to a report by the Energy Services Regulatory Authority (ERSE). This Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal was responsible for the overwhelming majority of the country's gas imports during the past year.

In total, 46 unloadings of methane ships were carried out at the Sines terminal in 2025, seven fewer than in 2024. However, the number of tankers supplied increased to 7,546, 214 more than the previous year.

The main countries of origin of the imported gas were Nigeria, United States and Russia. Nigeria represented 50% of the unloading operations, consolidating itself as the main supplier. In 2025, three Russian ships unloaded gas at the Sines terminal.

The gymnasium of neurons

This opinion article alerts to a problem in skills development: while schools avoid placing students in situations of effort and challenge, companies also eliminate the experimentation and error phase at work. The author argues that this "chain" of skills development is thus broken on both sides, depriving young people both of the experience of overcoming academic difficulties and of learning from failures in the professional environment, which compromises their comprehensive preparation for the world of work.

Sines received 95% of gas imported by Portugal in 2025

About 95% of natural gas imported by Portugal in 2025 arrived through the Sines terminal, with Nigeria (50%), the United States (43%) and Russia (7%) as the main countries of origin, according to a report by ERSE. Forty-six LNG carrier unloadings were carried out at the terminal, seven fewer than in 2024, and 7,546 tankers were supplied. Portugal intends to end Russian LNG imports by early 2027, under European rules, with only one long-term contract with the Spanish company Naturgy. The remaining 5% of gas entered via pipeline through the connections with the Spanish network. The ERSE report also concludes that there was an overall improvement in the performance of gas networks in 2025, with a reduction in the number and duration of supply interruptions.
