GNR joins PSP in protests for salary increases

Observador11 September 2026 at 19:44

The Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) announced that it will join the Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP) in protests for salary increases. This decision marks an escalation in the contestation by security forces in Portugal.

The professionals from GNR and PSP intend to intensify their protest actions in the coming weeks. The two security forces are planning joint actions to reinforce pressure on the Government.

The main objective of these demonstrations is to pressure the executive to fulfill the commitments it made in 2024 regarding salary increases for the security forces. The professionals consider that these promises have not yet been fulfilled.

OE2027: Gaia City Council wants elimination of toll gantries on A29 and A32

The Vila Nova de Gaia City Council approved unanimously a proposal for the elimination of toll gantries on the A29 and A32 motorways to be included in the 2027 State Budget. The municipal executive, led by Luís Filipe Menezes (PSD/CDS-PP/IL), approved the elimination of the gantry on the A29 in Gulpilhares, which was installed in 2010 and has caused protests and losses for residents, who used secondary roads to avoid payment. The proposal to eliminate the gantries on the A32 came from the PS and was integrated into a common proposal approved unanimously. Menezes considered the gantry an injustice for users and asked the government and all political forces to approve this measure of "justice and social equity".
