The second giant panda cub born in South Korea turns 100 days old and gets a new name

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General11 September 2026 at 17:37

A zoo in South Korea revealed the name of a giant panda cub born at its facility, coinciding with the animal's 100 days of life. The cub was named Shu Bao, which in Chinese means "a treasure as bright as the light of dawn." The name was chosen through a vote on the zoo's social media and a public voting event that had the participation of 10,000 people.

Shu Bao was born on June 3 at the Everland theme park, near Seoul, and is the third youngest sister of Fu Bao. Fu Bao was the first giant panda born in South Korea and gained great popularity in the country before returning to China.

The cub's parents, Ai Bao and Le Bao, arrived in South Korea from China's Sichuan province in 2016. The two pandas were sent as part of the program known as China's "panda diplomacy," which consists of lending giant pandas to foreign countries as a gesture of international cooperation.
