The Secretary-General of PS, José Luís Carneiro, stated that news published this Friday confirms the criticisms he has been making to the Government about the increase in State revenue from fuels, accusing the executive of "giving with one hand and taking with two". The socialist leader emphasized that the news published shows that he was right when he made those criticisms.
Carneiro made these statements at the entrance to a meeting with members of the governing board of the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities (ANMP), scheduled for late morning at the institution's headquarters in Coimbra. He argued that the news published by a daily and a weekly demonstrate that he was right in the criticisms directed at the Government.
The Secretary-General of PS emphasized that he drew attention to the front pages of today's newspapers, which confirm everything he has said in the last 15 days about the increase in revenue at the expense of fuels. He stated that he speaks in a sustained manner, as can be seen on the front pages of important newspapers.
Carneiro argued that there is a brutal increase in revenue that results both from VAT and from the increase in fuel taxes adopted in 2024 and also in 2025, but with effects in 2026. In his view, the "mini bonus in terms of IRS" and "the kind of support for a Christmas basket" are insufficient, as the State and the Government will collect a much higher value than what they are giving to people.
