The municipality of Aveiro will run a "pilot project" on Eça de Queirós Street, in the old area of the city centre, as part of the 25th European Mobility Week 2026, which runs from September 16 to 22, culminating in European Car-Free Day. The street will be closed during the week and the Council has invited local restaurants to install terraces outdoors.

After some years of hiatus, Aveiro resumes its participation in this European initiative that promotes more sustainable, safe and inclusive forms of transport. The 2026 edition has the theme "Mobility for all – Justice between generations" and the motto "Combine and Move!", intending to draw attention to the need for transport systems that meet the needs of different generations.

Traffic restrictions will be implemented on several streets in the city centre, with the council appealing to motorists' understanding and recommending the use of public transport, bicycles and walking. The programme includes the Mobility Fair, street entertainment, activities for children and families, bicycle demonstrations and exhibitions.

The diverse programme includes conferences, walks, bike rides, cultural activities, exhibitions, family initiatives, awareness campaigns and health and well-being promotion activities. Highlights include the opening conference on September 16, a walk on September 17 and the initiative "To the Rhythm of the RIA" on September 18. Participation in several activities is free, subject to prior registration.
