Anthropic revealed on Thursday that a cell based in northern Yemen used Claude, its artificial intelligence, to try to develop three types of guided weapons. The American company identified the malicious cell that was conducting weapons development programs, including a guided rocket with a smartphone-like flight calculator.
The identified group is likely linked to the Houthis, Iran-backed insurgents who control much of northern Yemen, including the capital Sanaa. The revelation comes while Houthi rebels are launching a major offensive in the country.
Anthropic did not disclose the identity of the cell. The company published a report detailing how it interrupted illegal operations originating from various countries that were trying to use its AI for illicit purposes.
