Do you have a TV of this brand? Investigation says some models may be 'listening' even with the screen off

An investigation conducted by Gamers Nexus, in collaboration with Level1Techs and independent security researchers, analyzed the traffic and operation of LG Smart TVs and concluded that some devices may maintain data collection features even when the screen is off. The analysis identified behaviors such as audio capture and detection of nearby devices. LG contested the interpretation that the TVs are indiscriminately recording users, noting that these conclusions result from an independent investigation and not from a regulatory authority.

LG itself confirms, in its support documentation, that certain models with Direct Voice Recognition can be turned on by voice when the device is off. If the feature is active, the user can say the activation word "Hi LG" to turn on the television, provided options such as voice recognition and quick start functions are enabled. This does not mean all conversations are being recorded, but it indicates that some models have technical capability to remain attentive to voice commands with the screen off.

LG's privacy policy provides for the processing of audiovisual information and, for certain products and features, voice information. The company also possesses Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) technology, used to recognize content displayed on screen, having officially announced the global implementation of this solution on millions of Smart TVs. The US Federal Trade Commission had previously analyzed the use of ACR in smart televisions and warned about the significant amount of information about viewing habits that these devices can transmit.

According to official documentation updated by LG, agreements related to viewing information, voice features, and personalized advertising are optional and can be reviewed through privacy settings. The indicated path is Settings > Privacy and Terms > User Agreements, although menus may vary. Voice recognition can also be managed in the artificial intelligence service settings on compatible models.

According to the European Commission, the community executive will have access to this version of the model, although it is not the most recent available. The EC spokesperson did not confirm whether negotiations are underway to also obtain access to the more updated model, launched in September. This agreement represents a significant step in the relationship between the EU and AI companies, in a context of growing debate about the regulation and transparency of these technologies.
