Setúbal under yellow alert due to hot weather

Notícias de Setúbal11 September 2026 at 15:11

According to IPMA forecasts, the district of Setúbal is under yellow alert due to hot weather, with maximum temperatures close to 40 degrees Celsius forecast for the districts in the central and southern regions of the country. This weather pattern is accompanied by a gradual decrease in relative humidity and poor nocturnal recovery across much of the territory, from the 13th onwards, which may lead to the occurrence of tropical nights.

The combination of meteorological instability factors, with east quadrant winds with gusts that can reach 40 kilometres, leads to a gradual increase in the danger of rural fires, with danger classes classified between "Very High" and "Maximum", especially in the central interior and south and in the Algarve.

The National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection recommends adapting behaviours and attitudes in light of the rural fire danger situation, namely the adoption of prevention and precaution measures, in accordance with current legislation, and paying special attention to the evolution of fire danger during this period.

In this context, the population should adopt self-protection measures, including avoiding sun exposure between 11:00 and 17:00, applying sunscreen every two hours, maintaining good hydration, using cool environments and wearing cool clothing that covers the body.

The Azores High will strengthen and influence Portugal over the next 10 days, in three distinct moments, interspersed with changes in atmospheric circulation. The period will be marked by stable and dry weather, with temperature fluctuations, highlighting an episode of anomalous heat at the beginning, followed by a thermal drop and new stability. This area of subtropical high pressure in the North Atlantic, when it expands over the Iberian Peninsula, favors downward air movements, making it difficult for cloud formation and precipitation.
