One in six transactions on the Multibanco network in the summer was made with a foreign card

SAPO Notícias11 September 2026 at 15:03

During the summer, one in six transactions on the Multibanco network was made with a foreign card, according to SIBS Analytics data. This figure highlights the strong presence of tourists and international visitors in Portugal during the summer season.

The number of transactions made with foreign cards increased by 5% compared to the same period the previous year. This growth in the number of operations reflects the increase in tourist flow to the country.

In terms of transaction value, operations with foreign cards showed a 1% increase. This more moderate growth in value, when compared to the increase in the number of transactions, suggests that the average value per transaction may have decreased.

SIBS Analytics, responsible for the collection and analysis of this data, is the entity that manages the Multibanco network, the main automated teller machine and payment terminal network in Portugal.

The association also warned about the price difference between Portugal and Spain, which can reach 40 cents per liter, leading many drivers in border areas to cross the border for refueling, which is affecting the competitiveness of Portuguese companies.
