Cyclone forming brings storms to South and Southeast, with tornado risk in Paraná

oglobo11 September 2026 at 14:04

An extratropical cyclone is expected to form this Friday on the northern coast of Rio Grande do Sul, bringing severe storms to the South and Southeast regions of Brazil. The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) warns of tornado risk, mainly in the state of Paraná, where conditions are expected to be most critical.

According to Inmet, the most affected areas should register rain exceeding 60 millimeters per hour, winds above 100 km/h, and hail. The entire state of Paraná, from Curitiba to the border, is under red alert, which denotes "great danger" due to the forecast of damage to buildings, power outages, destruction of crops, falling trees, flooding, and transportation disruptions.

The cyclone, which is expected to form this Friday and continue acting tomorrow, will move toward the ocean, intensifying the bad weather that has already settled in the South region. The most complicated day will be this Friday, when the highest levels of instability and risk of severe weather are concentrated.

Setúbal under yellow alert due to hot weather

The district of Setúbal is under yellow alert due to hot weather, with maximum temperatures exceeding 35°C and approaching 40°C in the central and southern regions of the country. From the 13th onwards, a gradual decrease in relative humidity and poor nocturnal recovery is expected, which may lead to tropical nights. The combination of high temperatures with east wind and gusts up to 40 km/h raises the danger of rural fires to "Very High" to "Maximum" levels, especially in the central interior, south and Algarve. Civil Protection recommends that the population avoid sun exposure between 11:00 and 17:00, apply sunscreen every two hours, maintain good hydration and wear cool clothing that covers the body.

The Azores High will strengthen and influence Portugal up to three times in the next 10 days

The Azores High will strengthen and influence Portugal over the next 10 days, in three distinct moments, interspersed with changes in atmospheric circulation. The period will be marked by stable and dry weather, with temperature fluctuations, highlighting an episode of anomalous heat at the beginning, followed by a thermal drop and new stability. This area of subtropical high pressure in the North Atlantic, when it expands over the Iberian Peninsula, favors downward air movements, making it difficult for cloud formation and precipitation.
