Emma Bonino has died at the age of 78. The former European commissioner and Italian minister was a prominent figure in Italian and European politics.
Bonino was one of the main protagonists in the legalization of abortion in Italy. Her involvement in this battle put her in direct confrontation with the Vatican, at a time when the Catholic Church had enormous political influence in the country.
Her death represents the loss of one of the most emblematic women in the history of contemporary Italian politics, known for her persistent fight in defense of women's rights and civil liberties.
