The Spanish Government is preparing a royal decree to establish new and stricter environmental and digital security requirements for future data centers in the country. This regulatory initiative aims to strengthen the requirements for these technological infrastructures, which are increasingly relevant in the digital economy.
The proposed decree generated strong controversy among various sectors. Technology, electric, construction, real estate companies and public administrations expressed their disagreement with the new requirements established by the Executive. These entities consider that the requirements are too strict and may hinder the development of new data center projects in Spain.
The mobilization against the decree was significant, with more than 600 claims submitted to the Executive during the public consultation period. The affected sectors are trying to reverse or modify the new requirements that the Government intends to impose on digital facilities, arguing that some of the requirements may be harmful to the sector's competitiveness.
