Rain returns to the Azores this Friday, September 11, and is expected to mark the weather conditions throughout the entire weekend. The Portuguese Institute for the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) updated the forecast, which covers all three groups of the archipelago. The most unstable scenario is expected for the Western Group, where periods of rain are already expected during this Friday, with conditions favorable for thunderstorm occurrence. The wind will blow from the south, light to moderate, later rotating to southwest.

In the Central Group, showers are expected, with periods of very cloudy skies and good sunny breaks. In the Eastern Group, the scenario will be calmer, with periods of very cloudy skies, but without indication of significant precipitation for this Friday. On Saturday, September 12, the instability is expected to extend, with generally light rain periods in the Western Group and light showers in the Central and Eastern groups, the latter especially toward the end of the day.

On Sunday, September 13, rain will continue to be present in some islands. The Western Group should have periods of rain especially during the early morning and morning, with sunny breaks from the afternoon onward. In the Central Group, precipitation is expected to return by the end of the day, although weak. In the Eastern Group, the forecast points only to periods of very cloudy skies with good sunny breaks.

Despite the rain, temperatures remain relatively high. IPMA forecasts highs of 28 degrees in Santa Cruz das Flores and in Horta, 27 degrees in Angra do Heroísmo and also 27 degrees in Ponta Delgada. The sea water temperature should be around 25 degrees in all groups of the archipelago.

Setúbal under yellow alert due to hot weather

The district of Setúbal is under yellow alert due to hot weather, with maximum temperatures exceeding 35°C and approaching 40°C in the central and southern regions of the country. From the 13th onwards, a gradual decrease in relative humidity and poor nocturnal recovery is expected, which may lead to tropical nights. The combination of high temperatures with east wind and gusts up to 40 km/h raises the danger of rural fires to "Very High" to "Maximum" levels, especially in the central interior, south and Algarve. Civil Protection recommends that the population avoid sun exposure between 11:00 and 17:00, apply sunscreen every two hours, maintain good hydration and wear cool clothing that covers the body.

The Azores High will strengthen and influence Portugal up to three times in the next 10 days

The Azores High will strengthen and influence Portugal over the next 10 days, in three distinct moments, interspersed with changes in atmospheric circulation. The period will be marked by stable and dry weather, with temperature fluctuations, highlighting an episode of anomalous heat at the beginning, followed by a thermal drop and new stability. This area of subtropical high pressure in the North Atlantic, when it expands over the Iberian Peninsula, favors downward air movements, making it difficult for cloud formation and precipitation.
