Bill 949/2024, authored by Deputy Flávia Morais (PDT-GO), is ready for voting in the Federal Senate's Social Affairs Committee (CAS). The proposal establishes the National Plan for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Care and was already approved by the Chamber of Deputies before moving to the Senate.
COPD is a progressive and incurable respiratory condition, strongly associated with smoking, that currently affects approximately 14 million Brazilians. The disease represents the 5th leading cause of death in the country and the 8th cause of years of life lost due to disability, generating great pressure on the health system with frequent hospitalizations resulting from acute crises.
The project's objective is to coordinate a national public response focused on prevention, early diagnosis, adequate treatment, and improving the quality of life of patients served by the Unified Health System (SUS). The proposal seeks to establish a comprehensive policy to address the structural and economic challenges that the disease imposes on the Brazilian health system.
