A 27-year-old Italian ambulance driver, Luca Spada, goes to trial under the accusation of having killed an 85-year-old patient, Deanna Mambelli, by injecting air into her veins while she was being transported by Red Cross ambulance on November 25, 2025. The prosecutors in the case state that he was driven by an "uncontrollable" desire to kill.
Spada is also under investigation for the death of five other patients in the same manner: Mirella Montanari, Francesco Mario Scavone, Edoarda Gasperini, Vincenzo Pesci, and Vittorio Benini. All were elderly and severely ill patients.
The prosecutors describe Luca Spada as an "obsessive" serial killer who chose his victims in a "predatory" manner. Although he had first responder training, he has no paramedic qualifications.
According to investigators, Spada deliberately injected lethal doses of air into the patients' veins to cause death.
