Asylum applications in the European Union fall 17% in the first half

International protection applications in the European Union fell 17% in the first half of the year, totaling 332,000 requests. This number represents the lowest levels of asylum applications since 2021, indicating a significant downward trend in the demand for international protection in the European bloc.

The European Union Agency for Asylum is the source responsible for publishing these figures, having analyzed the evolution of applications during the first half of the year. The agency also revealed that the escalation of tension in the Middle East had no impact on the increase in asylum applications, contradicting possible expectations that conflicts in the region could boost arrivals to Europe.

In terms of geographical distribution, France and Italy stood out as the main receiving countries for asylum applications in the EU during this period. These two countries led the receptions, taking on a central role in the processing and welcoming of international protection applicants.
