An abandoned quarry in southwest China revealed to scientists an extraordinary haul of fossils and artefacts that is changing understanding of the Denisovans, one of the most mysterious groups of ancient humans. The objects found at the site allow us to know, as never before, the life and capabilities of these ancient humans.
The evidence collected at the site indicates that the Denisovans made bone tools similar to those of their relatives, the Neanderthals, demonstrating sophisticated technological capabilities. This discovery suggests that the Denisovans possessed technical skills comparable to those of other ancient human groups from the Stone Age.
The objects found in the cave also suggest that the Denisovans were skilled hunters. The Denisovans inhabited the site for at least 30,000 years, indicating a prolonged and well-adapted presence in that environment.
