Emma Bonino, one of the most striking political figures in contemporary Italy, died at the age of 78. Italian, she built her career based on the defense of women's rights, especially the right to abortion, becoming an international reference of feminism. A former member of the Radical Party, Bonino held prominent positions such as deputy, senator, European commissioner, and minister of Foreign Affairs, earning the respect of different political currents in the country.

+Europa, the small party founded by Bonino, reacted to the death with a post on Facebook stating: "Today we lose not only our leader, but also one of the most lucid, courageous, and free figures in the political history of our country."

In 2015, Bonino was diagnosed with lung cancer. In 2023, she had been cured of the disease, but a year later was hospitalized due to respiratory problems. During her home recovery, she received a surprise visit from Pope Francis.

The two shared concern for migrants' rights and had great esteem for each other, despite the cultural and religious differences that separated them.
