An Algarve that doesn't fit on a postcard | By Ana Alexandra Resende

The archaeologist and writer Ana Alexandra Resende wrote an article about the Algarve that goes beyond the postcard image that the region has projected for decades around the world. The article argues that the Algarve is known for the blue of the sea, the cliffs, the beaches, and the sun, but that this is only part of its identity, with another layer of history that does not immediately reveal itself to the eye.

The name "Algarve" has Arabic origins, deriving from "al-Gharb," which means "the West." During the Islamic period, these lands were part of the Gharb al-Andalus, being the southwesternmost edge of the Islamic world on the Iberian Peninsula. Before that, Prehistory left the first evidence of the communities that occupied the territory, followed by the Cynetes or Cinetes, culturally linked to Tartessos, the Phoenicians, the Romans, and again by the Islamic world, each leaving marks on the landscape, in the cities, and in the names of places.

The author reflects on the role of Archaeology as a discipline that reveals people from the past, not merely ancient objects. A fragment of pottery or a lost coin become significant when one imagines the human hand that touched them. The author argues that transforming a territory without knowing its history results in a double loss: of the matter and of the story it could have told.

The article serves as an introduction to a series in which Ana Alexandra Resende intends to explore the Algarve hidden beneath what is visible, seeking the traces of the peoples who crossed this land before us, showing that the Algarve was port, border, path, and home throughout millennia, being merely another layer in the history of a territory that has already belonged to many.
