An Algarve that doesn't fit on a postcard | By Ana Alexandra Resende

This opinion article by archaeologist and writer Ana Alexandra Resende explores the deep history and archaeological heritage of the Algarve, arguing that this Portuguese region is much more than the image of beaches and golf courses. The author describes the layers of peoples and civilizations that inhabited the territory — from Prehistory, through the Cynetes, Phoenicians, Romans, and the Islamic period, from which the very name "Al-Gharb" (the West) survived. Resende argues that archaeology reveals people and stories, and that transforming a territory without knowing its past means losing history twice. The article calls for the past to be given the right to be heard before it disappears, because knowing a place means understanding that the earth keeps the memory of those who walked on it before us.

Study says the native forest of the Azores is preventing the disappearance of small animals

A 20-year study conducted by researchers from CE3C and the University of the Azores analyzed 405 arthropod species in the native forest of the Azores, finding that more than half (55%) remain stable, 28% show significant declines and 17% are increasing. The native forest serves as a refuge for these small animals, including 91 endemic species, but seven rare species were not refound and are considered probably extinct. The researchers warn that, although native forest protection is working, it is necessary to maintain long-term monitoring and invest in active conservation to protect the most vulnerable species.

The president of the Spanish Heart Foundation, Dr. Andrés Íñiguez Romo, argues that prevention must begin in childhood, with solid scientific evidence linking cardiovascular health in childhood with the likelihood of developing heart disease in adulthood. An event held in Madrid marked the beginning of Heart Month.
