Full Professor Carlos Neto, a specialist in Human Motricity, argues that children should spend the first two to three weeks of classes playing, instead of immediately starting with curriculum content. According to the specialist, this playtime would serve for children to "learn how to relate to each other."
The alert comes at the start of another school year, in which schools are preparing to receive 1.6 million children and young people. Carlos Neto also expresses concern about the current state of playgrounds in Portuguese schools.
The professor laments the lack of conditions of school spaces and advocates for the creation of a National Plan for the Rehabilitation of School Spaces, which would allow for the improvement of the infrastructure available to children. This would be a way to promote more physical activity and social interaction among students.
