USA Marks 25 Years Since September 11 Attacks

The United States marks today the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks, the deadliest terrorist attack ever carried out on American soil. The action was coordinated by the extremist organization Al-Qaeda, responsible for serious human rights violations and thousands of deaths.

The attack caused nearly three thousand victims, including nine Portuguese and Lusophone citizens. It left deep marks on US and world domestic and foreign policy, significantly altering the way the United States and the international community view security and counterterrorism issues.

Official ceremonies are taking place at the four sites hit by the attacks, bringing together survivors, victims' families and authorities to pay tribute to those who lost their lives on that day that changed contemporary history.
