Monsaraz prepares to receive a Mars analog mission

Meteored Portugal11 September 2026 at 08:39

In April 2027, Monsaraz, a medieval village in the Alto Alentejo, and the Alqueva region will host the AMADEE-27 mission, a Mars analog space simulation. For two weeks, six analog astronauts will live isolated in a closed habitat, testing technologies and procedures designed for future human missions to the Red Planet. The mission is organized by the Austrian Space Forum (OeWF) and represents a new step in establishing Portugal as a privileged venue for planetary simulations. The participants will wear state-of-the-art spacesuits and transform the Alentejo landscape into one of the world's most advanced space exploration laboratories.

Monitoring of the Lis river confirms ecological recovery after sewage discharge

A monitoring study of the Lis river confirmed ecological recovery after the sewage discharge resulting from a breakdown at the Monte Real pumping station. The investigation identified 12 fish species in the watercourse, including the European eel and the ruivaco, demonstrating that the impacts of the discharge were acute, localized and short-lived. The results suggest that the river ecosystem was able to recover satisfactorily after the incident.
