Two red panda twin cubs were born at Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire, United Kingdom, in the early hours of July 16. The cubs are approximately six weeks old and weigh just over 90 grams each, the equivalent of a banana's weight. They still remain inside the nesting box, under the care of their mother, Ruby, who is five years old.
The newborns were born with their eyes closed and have not yet fully developed the species' characteristic reddish-orange fur. According to the zoo, they have been gaining weight and strength daily and are expected to begin exploring the outdoor area around three months of age. The sex of the cubs has not yet been identified.
The zoo team monitored the pregnancy after noticing changes in Ruby's behavior and weight gain. Manager Amanda Robinson is part of the team that monitored the mother throughout the entire gestation period.
