The 2026 Global Peace Index was released in June and classifies 163 countries and territories based on indicators that measure different aspects of security and stability. The ranking considers approximately 99.7% of the world population and uses 23 indicators related to the so-called "peacefulness," such as crime, terrorism, violent protests, relations with neighboring countries and political situation.
The survey is produced annually by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) since 2007 and allows comparing the situation of countries over time. The logic of the classification is simple: the lower the score obtained by a country, the higher its recorded level of peace. Countries with higher scores appear in the lower positions of the ranking, indicating greater insecurity.
The index shows how the global peace landscape has changed over the past year and reveals which are the safest and least safe countries to live in. The 2026 edition brings important updates about the world classification.
