Much before beer: cave men may have been the first 'drug' users 25 thousand years ago

Archaeologists found in teeth of hunter-gatherer skeletons dated between 23 thousand and 4,300 BC, in Indonesia, evidence that the habit of chewing betel nut (seed of the areca palm) may have started up to 25 thousand years ago, during the Ice Age. The research, published in the journal Science Advances, identified unusual dental wear patterns compatible with the habit of keeping hard objects in the mouth, in addition to chemical residues that confirm the consumption of areca seeds. According to Professor Adam Brumm, from Griffith University, in Australia, the finding may represent one of the oldest evidence of psychoactive substance use by humans, possibly having caused significant damage to the teeth of these ancient humans.

Super-venomous lionfish: meet the invasive species found in Salvador

Two lionfish, an invasive species originating from the Indo-Pacific, were captured at Porto da Barra in Salvador, raising alerts among authorities and swimmers. The animal, with a striking appearance featuring stripes and large fan-shaped fins, is technically venomous and uses its long spines to inject venom, posing a risk to both humans and the ecosystem of Todos-os-Santos Bay.
