Chinese scientists have developed a living construction material with strength equivalent to concrete. This breakthrough was achieved through an innovative combination of Martian rocks with gelatin and yeast from Earth.
The material was specifically created to enable the construction of housing through 3D printing on the planet Mars. The use of local Martian resources significantly reduces the need to transport construction materials from Earth, which represents a considerable advantage for future space missions.
In addition to its strength, the material presents an important characteristic: it can be recycled or reused. This property makes it particularly suitable for long-duration space missions, where resource sustainability is essential.
This development is part of international efforts to prepare for the colonization of Mars, offering a practical solution to one of the greatest challenges of space exploration: building safe and durable habitats on another planet.
