At least two lionfish were captured at Porto da Barra, one of the most famous beaches in Salvador. The presence of the animals raised an alert among local authorities due to the proximity to swimmers and the potential for ecosystem imbalance in Todos-os-Santos Bay.
The lionfish is an animal with a striking appearance, with light and dark stripes, large open fins in a fan shape, and long spines. Originating from the Indo-Pacific, the species arrived in the Atlantic Ocean and began spreading as an invasive species.
The animal is technically classified as venomous because it uses its spines to inject venom. The accident does not occur from bites or deliberate attacks: normally, the person is injured when touching, stepping on, or trying to capture the fish.
The lionfish's spines continue to pose a risk even after the animal's death. The puncture can cause painful reactions in humans who come into contact with the animal.
