War in Lebanon threatens Syrian rock hyrax habitat

Observador11 September 2026 at 00:43

The war in Lebanon is putting at risk the habitat of the Syrian rock hyrax, a species that inhabits the mountainous regions of the country. The bombings and demolition of infrastructure have been destroying natural areas where this species lives, threatening its long-term survival.

The extent of the damage caused to the habitat is still difficult to assess, since conditions on the ground make it difficult to collect accurate data. Local organizations have expressed concern about the scarcity of information available to measure the real impact of the conflict on the population of this species.

The data that has been released so far is alarming for the organizations that are monitoring the situation. These entities warn that the destruction of the habitat can have serious and potentially irreversible consequences for the Syrian rock hyrax in Lebanon.
