The United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced that the current El Niño phenomenon has a 75% chance of reaching a "historic" intensity, surpassing all previous events since 1950. The phenomenon, which is expected to peak later this year, is responsible for droughts, floods, and extreme temperatures worldwide. It is a natural climate variation that occurs every two to seven years, when the surface waters of the equatorial Pacific warm up, altering global wind, pressure, and precipitation patterns. The probability of a historic event rose from 69% to 75% compared to the previous estimate.
