The Saharawi community in the Canary Islands celebrates the approval of the Saharawi nationality law in Congress as an act of historical reparation. The norm allows granting Spanish nationality by naturalization letter to people born in Western Sahara before 1977, when the territory was still under Spanish Administration.
The Canary Islands, a region historically linked to the Saharawi people, positively values this measure by establishing a specific pathway for access to nationality for those born in the former Spanish territory before Spain's withdrawal.
However, the Saharawi community in the Canary Islands also recognizes that the law is not sufficient. They consider that, although everything that benefits the Saharawis is seen positively, there is a broader injustice in what is being done with the Saharawi people in general.
The president of the Canary Association of Friendship with the Saharawi People, Alberto Negrín, was the one who expressed this view that the measure, although welcome, does not cover all the demands for reparation and recognition requested by the community.
