Fux gives 15 days for the Union, Central Bank and FGC to respond about guarantee of billions in aid to BRB

cbn10 September 2026 at 23:03

Justice Luiz Fux, from the Federal Supreme Court, established a 15-day deadline for the Union, the Central Bank and the Credit Guarantee Fund (FGC) to respond to a request from the Federal District Government to compel the federal government to guarantee a 6.6 billion reais loan intended for BRB (Banco de Brasília).

The demand is related to the billion-dollar shortfall caused by the failed attempt by BRB to purchase Banco Master. In the decision, Fux stated that there is "complexity and peculiarities involved in the demand" to justify the established deadline.

The case will be sent to the Attorney General's Office after the responses from the involved agencies, before returning to the justice for a decision on the urgency request. The Federal District Government argues that three months after an agreement made at the STF itself, the Union has not yet adopted the necessary measures to make the loan to the bank viable.

New social welfare model in Higher Education: strengthen without excluding

The article analyzes the new Regulation for the Award of Scholarships to Higher Education Students approved by the Portuguese Government in May, which adjusts scholarship amounts to students' economic conditions and regional cost of living. The rector of the University of Aveiro warns that preliminary simulations at the institution indicate that around 20% of scholarship recipients analyzed (15 out of 72 cases) could no longer meet the conditions to receive a scholarship under the new rules. Although recognizing that the phased implementation until 2027/28 is positive, he argues that the reform requires a rigorous assessment of its effects, as the success of a social welfare policy is not measured only by the value of support, but also by the ability to ensure that no one is left behind.
