The Minister of Education announced that, starting from the 2027/2028 school year, a pilot project to merge the 1st and 2nd cycles of basic education will be carried out. This project will be implemented in a wide range of schools across the country.

The association of school principals considers that this merger can be positive. However, the association argues that the measure must be clearly explained to the educational community and the general population.

The announcement comes in a context of reformulation of the Portuguese educational system, with the government seeking ways to reorganize basic education cycles more efficiently.

The merger of the first two cycles of basic education represents a significant change in the traditional school structure, which may affect the way teaching is organized and delivered in the schools involved in the pilot project.
