Brussels presented a proposal aimed at regulating short-term rentals, allowing municipalities to limit this activity and non-resident properties. The European Commission clarified that the measure is not against short-term rentals, but rather a way for member states to have more control over the activity.
The proposal provides for national governments to be able to impose restrictions on landlords wishing to rent properties through platforms such as Airbnb, giving more autonomy to local authorities to regulate the sector.
Most MEPs considered that the proposal could have gone further in terms of regulation, suggesting that the measures are insufficient to solve the problems associated with short-term rentals in urban centres.
The housing issue has been a growing concern in the European Union, with several countries facing difficulties in accessing homes, especially in major cities where demand for short-term rentals is high.
