Grazing and prescribed fire are bets for preventing fires

Diário de Viseu10 September 2026 at 19:00

Grazing and prescribed fire are strategies pointed out as measures to prevent forest fires. These fuel management practices aim to reduce the amount of flammable material in rural areas, thus decreasing the risk of large-scale fire propagation.

Paulo Mateus was one of the voices that reinforced the importance of these approaches. According to him, fuel management will allow achieving concrete results in fire prevention.

The main argument presented is that these strategies create predictability for those who already operate or intend to operate in the territory. This predictability benefits both rural landowners and professionals working in fire prevention and suppression.

The combination of grazing and prescribed fire emerges as an alternative to traditional prevention measures, seeking to manage rural spaces more efficiently and reduce risks associated with forest fires.
