An illegal scrap yard in the Carobinha region, in Campo Grande, in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro, was targeted by a Civil Police operation on Wednesday (9). Agents from the Specialized Robbery and Theft Division (DRF) executed a search and seizure warrant at the establishment, which operated without a license. The person responsible for the location was arrested in the act for the crimes of qualified receiving of stolen goods and qualified theft.
During the inspection, the civil police seized almost two tons of materials without provenance. Among the items found were more than 400 traffic signs, traffic lights, train tracks, fire hydrants, copper wires and manhole covers. Part of the equipment was in perfect condition, suggesting it was not discarded material.
The operation began from intelligence work and monitoring conducted by the DRF. The agents identified that the establishment operated illegally and that the materials had illicit origin. The owner of the scrap yard told the police that he had received the products as a donation, but did not present documentation proving the regular origin of the materials.
