The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has denied that it sidelined Portuguese economist Ricardo Reis from a selection process for a position at the institution because of criticisms of the economic policy of US President Donald Trump.
The denial comes following a report published by the Financial Times, according to which Ricardo Reis was allegedly excluded from the selection process for having questioned the economic validity of the tariff duties imposed by the United States Government.
The IMF, through a spokesperson, responded to the British newspaper's publication, rejecting the accusations that the decision was related to the opinions expressed by the Portuguese economist about Trump's policies.
Ricardo Reis is a renowned economics specialist with an academic connection to the London School of Economics, and the controversy arises at a time of tension between the international financial institution and the US administration.
