AI risk is "real" but debate may be "dangerous marketing from the companies themselves"

RTP Notícias10 September 2026 at 17:00

Dalila Durães, vice-president of the Portuguese Association for Artificial Intelligence, agreed this Thursday that there is a real risk in the artificial intelligence sector. The executive acknowledged that the technology presents dangers that society should not ignore.

However, Durães warned that the intense media debate about AI dangers may not be as innocent as it seems. According to the vice-president, part of this public debate may constitute "some type of dangerous marketing" promoted by the tech companies themselves.

The implicit suggestion is that industry giants may be using warnings about artificial intelligence risks as a communication strategy to influence public opinion and possibly regulators, rather than being genuine expressions of concern.

His concerns are shared by Evan Hubinger, leader of Anthropic's safety testing team, who believes there is more than 10% probability that AI will kill all humans in the next decade.
