Jacob Coxon, a 27-year-old artificial intelligence researcher who had left OpenAI to join Anthropic, decided to completely leave the sector. Coxon spent the last three years studying the risks associated with AI and accuses both American companies of "playing with our lives" in the race to develop AI models capable of self-improvement.
His main concern relates to recursive self-improvement of AI, a process by which artificial intelligence systems could improve themselves autonomously and potentially uncontrollably.
This extreme position by Coxon contrasts with warnings from within Anthropic itself. Evan Hubinger, leader of the company's safety testing team, states that AI can kill all humans and considers the probability of this happening in the next decade to be greater than 10%.
Coxon's departure from the sector comes at a time when competition between companies like OpenAI and Anthropic to create increasingly advanced systems continues to intensify, raising concerns among some researchers about the pace of development without adequate safety measures.
