Paul Christiano, technology consultant for the United States government under the Trump administration, stated that OpenAI is not on track to reduce the risks of "catastrophic" loss of control to an acceptable level. Christiano warned that there is a significant risk that the rapid acceleration of artificial intelligence capabilities could lead to irreversible loss of control in the very near future.
The statement comes amid growing public and political concern that super-advanced artificial intelligences may one day pose an existential threat to humanity. Christiano stated that he does not believe the AI industry in general, including OpenAI, is currently on the right path to reduce this risk to an acceptable level.
Christiano was previously responsible for model alignment at OpenAI, a company headquartered in San Francisco. He made the statement upon joining the board of the company's nonprofit foundation and will also be part of the committee responsible for governing safety practices across the organization.
