The same basket, almost 68 euros more: how much shopping costs rose in four years

TVI Notícias10 September 2026 at 16:19

Food prices continue to rise consistently, week after week, affecting the purchasing power of consumers in Portugal. In Viseu, shoppers who went to the supermarkets this morning were already calculating the impact of the new increases on their family budgets.

A basic shopping basket now costs almost 68 euros more than it did four years ago, according to comparative data. This significant increase represents an added challenge for Portuguese families who see their disposable income diminished.

Inflation in the food sector has been a constant concern, with consumers feeling the weight of these changes in their daily spending. Many shoppers adapt their choices and reduce quantities to try to balance their budgets in the face of these continuous increases.
