Canceling debt would be "financially dangerous," Lagarde warns

Jornal de Negócios10 September 2026 at 15:14

The President of the European Central Bank (ECB), Christine Lagarde, warned that the cancellation of public debt would be "financially dangerous". Lagarde made these statements while criticizing a controversial proposal that suggests the cancellation of debt held by the central bank.

The ECB official also stated that, at this time, she has "nothing to report" about a possible participation in the French presidential elections. Lagarde did not specify whether she would have intentions to run for the Elysée in the future.

The statements come in a context of political debate around alternative proposals to deal with European public debt, with the ECB President clearly expressing her opposition to the debt cancellation solution put forward by some sectors.

Lagarde, who has held the position of ECB President since 2019, has been a frequent voice in discussions on European monetary policy, now staying away from speculation about a possible presidential candidacy in France.
