Porto: Diocese Bids Farewell to D. Vitorino Soares, Before Departure for New Mission

The Diocese of Porto celebrated on Wednesday, September 10, 2026, the farewell of D. Vitorino Soares, auxiliary bishop who leaves the diocese to assume a new mission as bishop of the Algarve. The ceremony took place during the liturgical solemnity of the dedication of the Cathedral of Porto.

D. Vitorino Soares, who was ordained auxiliary bishop in 2019 and served for seven years as rector of the Major Seminary of Porto, expressed emotion at the departure, declaring: "My heart goes to the Algarve, but you will also go."

The bishop of Porto, D. Manuel Linda, expressed gratitude for the journey developed in harmony with D. Vitorino Soares, guaranteeing that the local Church will keep him in memory. D. Manuel Linda emphasized that "episcopal ordination does not confer a place to possess, but a Church to serve", adding that "what you do is obey the mission".

The canonical installation of the new bishop of the Algarve is scheduled for September 19, at 11:30 am, at the cathedral of Faro.
