The Portuguese Government will proceed with the merger of the 1st and 2nd cycles of basic education, creating a single cycle that covers from 1st to 6th year. The measure will be implemented gradually through a pilot project already planned for the 2027/2028 school year.
The confirmation was given by the Minister of Education, Fernando Alexandre. According to the minister, the merger will eliminate the current abrupt transition between 4th and 5th year, when students move from single-teacher instruction (one single teacher) to multiple teachers.
