Marine Le Pen, the likely presidential candidate of the National Rally, announced that, if she wins the presidential elections in the spring of 2027, she will implement a ban on the wearing of hijabs, or Muslim headscarves, in public spaces, including streets, shops and public transport.
Anyone who fails to comply with the ban will be penalised, "just like people who don't wear seatbelts in their cars," explained Jean-Philippe Tanguy, Le Pen's adviser.
The French media are indignant about this statement.
