Fernando Alexandre says João Costa was "quite serious and rigorous" when taking responsibility for Portugal's poor PISA results

CNN Portugal10 September 2026 at 16:01

Fernando Alexandre, former education minister, commented on João Costa's decision, current minister of Education, to take responsibility for Portugal's poor results in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA).

According to Fernando Alexandre, João Costa was "quite serious and rigorous" when publicly assuming responsibility for Portugal's negative results in the international assessment.

However, the former minister removed responsibility from the current government, arguing that the PISA assessment has a medium and long-term character, which means the results reflect educational policies implemented over several years and not just during the current government's term.
